    Summing

    Hi everyone;

I hope this is the right place to post.

I'm trying to sum a group of numbers in a column by highlighting all the cells and selecting 'Sum". When I do this, two things occur:

1st. I get a "circular reference" error and
2nd. Though the summing is correct, if I attempt to continue to sum AFTER that by selecting the SUBTOTAL and selecting the rest of the cells, it doesn't work.

I'm not familiar with formulas, and I simply want to be able to highlight cells, and add, subtract, etc., and to be able to continue as my spreadsheet develops with more data.

I hope this is clear, and thanks for your help.

    Using Excel 2007

    Thanks,

    Terry

You can't just highlight something and expect something to happen!!
What are you trying to do ?
Are you looking for a formula?
1st select a blank cell, then click sum,.then highlight the range to sum.....

Well, I thought I was clear, but, I'm trying to sum a column of numbers. For instance, say I have in column B, 25 different values. I select all 25 PLUS the cell (#26) in which I want the result, hit sum, and it correctly sums and places the sum in cell 26. However, I get the 'circular reference' error. (I'm not "just highlighting and expecting something to happen.").

Also, in attempting to use the total in cell 26, in my example, to add later values in the same column, gives me no result or an incorrect one.

Obviously, I'm not familiar with how this works, and that's whay I ask.

Sorry if confusing, I don't know what else to add.

Hi and welcome to the board
Try the following : select your 25 values
    Hit Alt+ "=" (no quotes)
This will automatically insert your sum in the 26 th cell

    Cheers
