SUM function???

ok real simple:

How do you sum cells if you are summing blank cells as well?

Ok, now i want column D to be the sum of colum A and column C, (A1 contains a blank cell, and C1 contains a currency like $10.00) so but for some reason i keep getting the #VALUE! error. It should be $10.00 since there is nothing in the blank cell. I have all the cells formatted in currency and dont understand.

I also have excel 2007. Can someone explain why the simple =SUM(A1+C1) doesnt work? so frustrating. It works if theres a zero in the cell but not if its blank? is there a way around this?
