Formulas not Calculating

I put equations in the cells but they won't calculate. I typed "=1+1" and it won't go. I changed the format to General Number from Text but it still won't calculate. I hit F9 and checked the Options to make sure Auto Calculate was on. Any ideas? Thanks.

The cell has to be pre-formatted as General....

select the cell (or column of cells) and go to Data|Text to Columns and just click Finish... that should convert them to General.
