    Adding Characters in several cells

Im trying to put a schedule togather in Exel and have divided the 4 different shifts into A,B,C,D.

I need a formula to add these characters and give me a numeric total.

Ie: Cells C1:G1 , each contain a character (A,B,C,D) Adding these Cells i would get an answer of 5.

    Hope thats understandable.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but maybe COUNTA is the function you are looking for. This counts the number of cells in a range that are not empty.

    That worked great thanx.

If i also wanted to count how many A or B or C or D in the same range of cells how would i go about it?

So i would know how many times they worked the A Shift or the B shift ect that week.

    =COUNTIF(C1:G1,"A")
Counts the number of A's in the range C1:G1
