Jumping to item in drop down list?

I first posted this in another thread at first. Someone pointed out that it was "piggy-backing" which was not my intention. If anyone was offended, I do offer apologies.

Hello. I have build an Excel sheet with drop down lists to make it harder for transcribers to enter something invalid. (I hope.)

Someone asked how to get the drop down list to open up without the mouse. I'd like to ask that slightly different.

How do I get the drop down list to open up when the cell is selected, BUT, as you type, your selection will go to that item in the list? I have all the states, and the respective counties states in one list. Here is a sample of what it looks like:

    USA, Florida, Miami-Dade
    USA, Florida, Monroe
    USA, Florida, Nassau
    USA, Indiana, Spencer
    USA, Indiana, Sullivan
    USA, Kentucky, Franklin
    USA, Kentucky, Green

(and so on. This is enough for the question.)

    If I start typing:
USA, Kentucky, F for example, it jumps the the first county in Kentucky beginning with an F, or at least, that is my intention.

    Is that possible please?

    Thank you.

    Robert

This is not exactly what you are asking for but maybe it could be an option.

Use data Validation/List to make sure the user can not input anything else than what is in the validation list. Place the validation list on top of the column you will be entering data in. Excel will then pop up with a suggestion when the user has entered enough caracters to finds a match in the list.

This auto complete function will not work if you have a blank row between the input cell and your validation list. If there is a chance that there might be a blank row in your sheet you could insert a new column, fill it with something and hide this column.

I guess you would also like to hide the rows on top of your sheet containing the validation list.

Another tip for making the typing faster is to use a separate column for Country and State name, then you dont have to type "USA, Kentucky, F" to find the match. You just type "U" match USA found, Next column type "Ke" match Kentucky found, Next column type "F" match Franklin found.
