lock puzzle numbers

In a crossword puzzle I am creating, can I lock the little numers in the various word cells, so my friends can downkoad and add/delete letters in cells without losing the cell numbers?
I would include the puzzle here, but I'm not sure how to do that.

To attach a file, create a zipped version of your Excel Spreadsheet, then click the paperclip icon in the Reply window and browse and attach the file.

If I understand what you are after you want to have a number shown in the cell and also have the cell editable to insert a different (text) value.

I don't think you will be able to find a way to do this, however you could perhaps get almost as good a result by adding a comment to the relevent cell.

Just click the right mouse button over the cell and select add comment, type in (for example) 1 down, then right mouse button again and select hide comment.

Now the top right corner is marked with a red triangle and as the mouse pointer moves over that cell a popup window appears saying 1 down.

The only other way I can think of doing it is by merging the cells of 2 adjacent columns, except for the cells where you want to put the numbers.
