Disable 'update/don't update' message when opening spreadsheet

I have set up a spreadsheet which links to a heap of other spreadsheets. I update this once a month and then send out a link to all of our employees that it has been updated. After I update this document I ensure that it is read only.

When my employees open up the document they receive the message:
This workbook contains links to other data sources.
    With the options
    Update
    Don't Update
    Help

My staff aren't too good with popup messages (they're not very computer-friendly) and I'd like to disable this from occuring. Because I update the workbooks attached to it monthly, I would need a manual way of having the workbook update the figures though. My ideal would be to only have the prompt display for me...but I know that that is dream-land stuff.

I found the following thread that gave me a way of doing it that I didn't understand (I'm okay with formulae, but that's the limit of my Excel experience).

Any ideas would be great (or the dummies guide to doing the above would be helpful too).

    Good morning tas666

If you want to avoid the message, and not use VBA (the answer you refer to) and you are using XL2002 or highr, then go to Edit > Links, StartUp Prompt and select the option "Don't display the alert and don't update links".

This needs to be done on each of your users' machines.

    Hey DominicB,

Thanks for the answer to my question, I wasn't aware of that option. Unfortunately I have about 80 staff over 6 sites (none of which are driving distance) so it's not really an option for me to turn that off.

I'm fine with doing the VBA stuff, I just may ask stupid questions in response that seem obvious to everyone else (Any key? I can't see an Any key).

    So yeah, VBA me!

    Hi tas666

Hmm, think I've slightly misinformed you here. When your sheet is complete, go to Edit > Links and select the option I've given above, and then save the workbook. This setting will then apply to this workbook, not a users machine.

You'll just have to remove this setting when you come to update your figures, then set it again before sending out.

This option is better than VBA because this would always generate its own "enable / diable macros" warning which would just flummox your users...
