    Making one cell recognise another

Sorry for sounding so dumb, but first time here, and this is probably so simple :-)

How do I make a cell in column B recognise what is in the cell next to it in column A.

Eg, I type in A in column A and in the cell next to it column B a 7 is put in.
I want to put letters in column A if that is possible and for each letter a certain number will apear next to it in column B.
    Eg, A will represent a 7, B a 10, C a 15 etc.

    Thanks for your help.

Since there doesn't seem to be any obvious pattern to assigning numbers to letters, you are probably better off creating a lookup table and using a Vlookup() formula..

If you set up a table, say in column Y and Z, with column Y having the letters and column Y having the respective number, then you can use a formula in B, like:

    =Vlookup(A1,Y:Z,2,0)
Where there is a will there are many ways.
