Displaying only the month of a date...

I tried searching for an answer before posting but couldn't find anything.

I have a date in column A and need to place just the Month of that date in Column B.

I've tried simple formatting but I can't figure out how not to include the year.

    Any suggestions?

Go to Format|Cells and Number tab. Select Custom and enter: mmmm

Depending on how many m's you enter, you'll get a variation in the representation of the month...experiment!

Another way is to use this formula in B2

    =TEXT(A2,"mmmm")

This one isn't working... keep getting an error that asks for a date between April 07 and april 08.

NEW PROBLEM... it turns out that I need the Month name to be string data so that I can use it in a pivot table.

Thanks for the help folks... I believe I have everything straightened out.

the TEXT function does work and served the purpose of preparing the data for pivots perfectly as it should have. The error I was having was caused by the locked cells and lists created by the previous owner of the workbook.

    All is well now.

    Thanks again.
