Hot to unlock file that indicates incorrectly it is in use

Experiencing a new/strange problem. When I open a previously saved Excel file from mydocuments folder I get the following warning and can't get to the file so I can edit it.

"File in Use: File.xls is locked for editing.
    by John Ellis
Open 'Read-only' or click 'Notify' to open read only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use."

I have tried everything I know how to do to get this locked file unlocked.

Any advice appreciated how to fix this.

    Good evening jellis00

    ...and welcome to the forum!!

I used to experience this kind of thing frequently when working over a network - usually a simple reboot did the trick. Sometimes a rebooted server did the trick. If these don't work open the file as read-only and save it as a different name. Then at a later point in time, delete the original "locked" file and rename the new file to the old name.

It's a bit of messing about, but it should be OK.
