    Excel acting weird

    Hello,

Excel has started to act weird in a few different ways:

    - All cells that are not blank have the alignment code automatically entered in them, even if I did not type it. For example, typing test results in 'test if the text is aligned to the left, ^test if it is centered or "test if it is aligned to the right.
    - Hitting tab takes me from column A to column N, L, or something different, depending on the sheet I'm on, and tabbing again takes me to, say, AA, then AN, then BA, BN, etc.
    - Hitting Home does what Ctrl+Home should do, i.e. go to A1
    - Hitting Ctrl+Home does what Home should do, i.e. go to the first column of the row I'm on.
    - Ctrl+Shift and an arrow doesn't do anything, instead of normally selecting everything until the last item of this row/column

I think there might be more but Excel is just too painful to use this way for me to use it and find out.

I am at work and it is quite unlikely that this would be cause by a virus. I am on Excel 97. This has happened before and the only way to remedy it was to flush my Windows profile. Uninstalling and reinstalling Excel did nothing. It would be great if there was an easier way than to delete my Windows profile every time this happens. This has apparently not happened to anyone else in the company (~400 users) and I am not using anything that is different than anyone else here. I have tried to look on the web but could not find anything similar.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Good evening john2

I think you have inadvertantly checked some of the options in the "transition" tab, to make Excel behave a bit like Lotus 1-2-3. It's there to help users move from 123 to XL but can be infuriating.

Go to Tools > Options, Transition, and untick any of the boxes in there which are ticked. That should sort out your odd behaviour.

Thank you so much, that was exactly it: "Transition navigation keys" was checked. I don't know how it got checked though, because I never go into this tab, but that seems to be another problem: my settings in the Options window seem to change by themselves, for example I have to check the "Iteration" box in the Calculation tab every once in a while because it gets unchecked for some reason... Anyway, thanks again for the help!

    Hi john2

I must admit that one or two of my options seem to change of their own free will, particularly automatic recalc option and the "Windows in task bar" seems to get unchecked from time to time.

    Anyway, glad you got sorted.

That should sort out your odd behaviour.
Of course, I meant your machines odd behaviour. Just thought I'd make that clear before the solicitors' letters start flying ... !
