Freeze panes

Hi everyone!

Well this is something that's been confusing me for some time now, and I'm sure it's really simple and I probably sound like a total fool... but .. I don't even know how to explain it! Basically you make it so that the first few cells stay where they are and you can move on and on with the rest of the sheet.. erm.. as I'm making no sense here is an example:

How it looks:

And then you go across and you can still see the first bit:
