fill color and font color no longer work!

For some reason the fill color and font color no longer work! If I set the font color as red, it continues to show up as black!

This is the strangest thing! I have no conditional formatting set and this just started a week ago. Can anybody help? Thanks much.

is this for a number (amount) format field where the (rightmouse, Format Cell) Number format is described as Red for negatives?

fill color and font color not working

    Bryan,

    Thanks for your quick response.

Unfortunately it happens even if I open up a brand new EXCEL spreadsheet and type in text OR numbers! The format type is General.

It happens for fill color AND font color.

I'm thinking it might be an install problem, so I guess I should re-install EXCEL.

My other Microsoft programs such as WORD and Powerpoint don't have this problem so it's not a color setting on my PC.

But what's really weird is that sometimes when I open up an old EXCEL the fill color appears. If I change the number value in the cell, the color disappears.

    HMMM…

    Hi,

doesn't sound good, with Excel closed try the (usual) cleanup of:

Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /unregserver
    then
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /regserver

Search for a file *.xlb and remove it

Search for a file Personal.xls and rename (to hide) it.

and if that fails then try posting a small sample of a book created on that PC (showing the problem).

font and fill color problems - getting stranger!

    Bryan,

Thanks again for such a quick reply.

I did the excel /unregserver and then the excel /regserver

I did not find an xlb file not could I find a personal.xls file.

I’ve attached a zip file that contains a 19k sample EXCEL file and a WORD doc with the screen print of the red font ....

It's getting stranger ... If you click on cell B1 and begin to edit it, the red font shows up!

Thanks again for your help Bryan.

    Hi,

What system / Excel are you using?

If you are using Windows then check in the folder

    C:\Documents and Setting\ your login name \Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

for the .xlb file, you may need to set your file browser to Show Hidden Files and Folders, and to Not hide files for known file extension types.

Then you can delete the .xlb

    font and fill color problems

Hi Bryan (if you are still out there ...)

Sorry I dropped the conversation thread, but I moved, so my life was chaos for a few months...

I found my MS-Office 2003 install disks and reinstalled MS-Office but that didn't solve the problem.

I'm using Windows XP and I checked the C:\Documents and Setting\ login name \Application Data\Microsoft\Excel folder for the .xlb file. No luck.

I set my Windows Explorer to Show Hidden Files and Folders, and to Not hide files for known file extension types, but I still couldn’t find the .xlb file.

I've attached the test zip file again. TIA for your help.

The .xlb file will be somewhere like C:\Documents and Settings\HomeUser\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
but if your Explore is set to 'Hide File Extensions of Known Filetypes' you will need to NOT hide the extensions to see the .xlb

The display appears on on my pc.

fill color and font color no longer work

    Bryan,

I’m not sure where else to look. As you can see from the attachment screen prints, nothing is hidden (including file extensions). I’ve searched my entire hard drive for the .xlb file and also looked at the specific folders in Documents and Settings (under Administrator, All Users, Default User and Lindy) for the .xlb file.

Is it possible that I don't have an .xlb file?

    Thx.

    Lindy,

I don't think that the .xlb is an optional file, if you have opened and closed Excel.exe then I believe there should be one.

    Try also
    Start
    Run
    Excel/exe /unregserver
    then
    Start
    RunExcel /regserver

    and try again.

Let me know how you go.

added, also check Tools, Options, Colour and do a Reset.

fill color and font color no longer work

    Bryan,

I did the Excel/exe /unregserver and got an error. (See attached screenshots).

I then ran Excel /unregserver (no "exe"). I did not get an error, but nothing seemed to happen.

For the heck of it, I ran the Excel /regserver anyway.

However, the problem still isn't fixed.

I also tried the Tools, Options, Colour Reset.

    Thx.

    Hi,

    correctly it is

    Start
    Run
    Excel.exe /unregserver

    and

    Start
    Run
    Excel.exe /regserver

    also you could try
    Start
    Control Panel
    Display
    Settings
and see what colour display you are using

If you are on 16 bit perhaps try High 24 bit etc

    Bryan

    I ran Start Run Excel.exe /unregserver

    and

    Start Run Excel.exe /regserver

    I also checked
    Control Panel
    Display
    Settings.

I am using 32 bit colour.

Maybe this is a hardware problem .... :-(

    Hi,

if it were then you would see it in other areas. Does the attached show correctly? or a look at http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/colors.htm should also indicate the state of display.

Did you find (and delete) the .xlb file?

    JR,

I unchecked High Contrast and it worked! Wow, what an obscure problem ...

    JR and Bryan,

Thank you both so much for all your help!

    I really appreciate it!
