Workbook opens multiple copies

When I open a particular file that was created by someone else, three files open. Project.xls:1
Project.xls:2
Project.xls:3

Why does this happen and how can I change it?

If someone mistakenly selected Window > New Window, it opens multiple copies of the same file. To close the "extra" copies, click on the document close "X" box (do not use File > Close from the menu, see attached picture). Once you close copies 2 and 3, save the file, and all should be well.
