formatting a cell to read dates

I am having trouble formatting the cells to read the date as MM/YY. I am currently using "text Format" to enter my text in the above format. I do not see a date "type" that matches MM/YY. So when I go to sort, it sorts by month then year. I need it to sort by year then month.

    Any suggestions would be great

Sounds like you'd be better off entering your dates as true dates, you can't leave out the day, i.e. you have to enter something like 1/1/2007 but if you use a custom format of mm/yy [you don't have to select it, just type it in the box] then the dates will display as you want and when you sort them they will appear in date order
