    Question Across files

    Hi
    this is my first post.
I have alot of text files containing data
What im trying to do is get excel to generate a report
where i can change the data that the report is based on
just by changing a few file names..
i guess a speadsheet should be able to do that
changing a file is just the same as changing some cells..

I would rather do it in a way that is not very interactive
that is set up the report spreadsheet and then each reporting
    period, change the data

    Can excel do this?
    Thanks in advance

In theory it can be done.

You would need to post a lot more details & possible a sample of your workbook & text files

Great to know it can be done

As a simple example, say i have text file scores.txt, comma delimetered
    NAME,YEAR,MONTH,SCORE
    fred,2007,1,20
    fred,2007,1,28
    john,2007,1,12
    betty,2007,1,22
    betty,2007,1,18
    john,2007,1,14
    fred,2007,1,24

    I want a report sheet reports.xls

Scores Report for Year 2007 Month 1
    USER MEAN MAX
    fred 24 28
    john 13 14
    betty 20 22

Rather than recode this for each month is there some way i can get
this report just to refer to the text file(or i could convert first to xls).
The text files are very large, and data is across multiple files this makes the interactive use of excel very slow and cumbersome, which is the main reason for my question,
I dont want to have to have all the files open in excel to get the job done....
    Thanks for help
    ez
