Add cell comments to a protected sheet

Is it possible to add a cell comment to a sheet that has been protected? Some of the cells on the sheet are locked and some are not, as soon as I protect the sheet I lose the ability to add a comment to any cells. I would like to have the sheet protected but be able to add comments to unlocked cells. Is this possible or am I trying to do the impossible.

when protecting a sheet, tick 'Edit Objects' and then you can.
