    One spreadsheet opens two copies!!

Hi There, has anyone come across this problem before..

I open book1.xls and it opens two workbooks, one called book1.xls:1 and book1.xls:2

If I close one of them it closed them both.

Really baffled and was hoping someone could tell me how this happens and how to fix it.

    thanks

    John

    Hi thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately that doesn't help me. The comments say you should close one of the 2 workbooks but in my problem that forces both to close.

    any ideas??

    Thanks

You get two windows (or more) by opening a workbook and then going to windows...new window

It can be a useful technique to keep your eye on two different areas of a workbook.

You should be able to close one window by clicking on the X in the top right hand of the window - not the one on the Excel window (that will close excel completely)

If you want to ensure that the workbook is opened with the multiple windows you can protect this by Tools/Protection/protect workbook and make sure the "windows" check box is ticked.

To undo this unprotect the workbook

    hope this helps
