Selection in a large list

Anyone got any suggestion of how to solve this problem?:

I want the user to select one of about 200 list items sorted A-z. A dropdown list doesnīt work that good, since you canīt see the whole list at the same time. In short I want this to happen:

User clicks hyperlink. List of 200 items open i separate sheet.
User selects one item by clicking on it.
Clicking one item causes return to main sheet.
Selected item appears in the correct (the hyperlinked) cell.

I canīt get it to work, but I realise that it canīt be that hard to implement.

What kind of attempts have you made ...?
Have you tried using a userform ... despite the 200 choices ...?
or may be dependent dropdown lists ...

I have tried dropdown list by combo boxes. That works quite nice, but operating includes a bit to much scrolling. I have also tried dependent dropdown list where you first choose the first letter. But that felt a bit to slow and complicated for the user since you don't get an overview of the possible choices. Even if its 200 items, itīs not that many. The human eye finds an item pretty quick when "eye-scrolling" through a list of that size.

A list box functions great, but takes to much space in the application. Maybe the combo box dropdown list is the best option anyway?
