Auto fit-content doesn't work with merged cells...?

Hi I've just started using this software and can't find anywhere in help or google how to auto-fit the contents of merged cells. Like, if I have some text in a single cell then double click just below the row button thing it autofits the text but not when the text is spread over merged cells. Is there a solution? It's very annoying lol.

    Hi,

If you consider that Autofit when used in a Column adusts the width of the column to the widest item, and for a Row adjusts the row width to accommodate the deepest item (possible) then it would be undestandable that it would not work on merged cell contents.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/212010 might help a little further.

    Hi,

If I may add a suggestion, especially if you are starting to use XL ...
Avoid merged cells, they defeat the whole purpose of XL itself ...
(each number located in its own cell)

So with the exception of headings and titles, if you discover that, for your work, merged cells are absolutely indispensable, it might be that your "cosmetic" needs are important ... so forget XL and use Word ...

    Hi Carim,

Totally agree on avoiding 'Merged Cells', and would also avoid them in headers and titles in favour od the 'Centre Across Selection' in the Horizontal option of 'Alignment' in Format Cells.

Use of trailing spaces to adjust this alignment helps to avoid merging cells to setup a reasonable set of sheet headings.
