This file is not a recognizable format

hi.
I was working on an excel sheet about ten days ago, today when i tried to open the file i got this message "This file is not a recognizable format".
Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?

Hi,

It means that the file, which you believe should be a valid .xls file, is no longer a valid Excel file. You could try yje Detect & Repair under 'Help'

If you cannot open the file via File Open from Excel or by 'Repair', you could try MS Word or Notepad to see if either give any clues as to what the file is, but most probably you will need to recover the file from your backuup area (you do keep backups of your files?)
