    true "ghost" mystery

Someone emailed me some Excel files and I converted them to a Microsoft Works spreadsheet file. However, on my desktop there remained a "ghost" of the Excel file containing 0 bytes that I cannot delete, access, place in folder, etc. When I click on it, it reads "Cannot find file." I try to open it with Adobe, MS, AOL but nothing can access it. I now have 7 of these icons on my screen and no apparent way to get rid of them. Any ideas? If it helps, two of the file names are: CAMJYF65 and CAKXQJAZ (which are not the file names of what was sent over to me).

I guess you dont virus scan all attachments you get?, if you get a file that may contain macros from a source you dont trust or recognise its always best to have your security set to high, then have a look at the macro's its going to run before allowing them.

All i can suggest is to google for a small program called Remove on Boot, once installed you right click the offending item and choose remove on next boot....and it does exactly that!

failing that you could try starting your pc in safe mode and then try deleting them.

    Regards,
    Simon

Thanks for the info--the original files came from a source I knew and often his files contain no problem coverting Excel to MS Works; these 7 icons over 2-3 days are different animals.
