Auditing functions "greying out"

At times the icons at the top of my screen as well as the options from within the menu become unavailabe when I use certain worksheets. It is probably something that has been triggered by a macro or similar but I can;t pin it down. Can anyone please suggest where I could look to get this back as I use auditing quite often?

Look in Tools > Protection, has someone set any???

No - nothing protected and no macros on sheet either
