    not sure,
Do you just want to add a worksheet, and you are pressing the icon that looks like a sheet of paper?? That opens a new book

    Use Shift F11

    or

    Alt Shift F1

    Hello paulwhyte,

how are you openning Excel? Is it from a short-cut on your desktop, only this may be the short-cut to lauch Excel.

When you have Excel open, go to File > New, this will open a new sheet for you.

Probably didnt explain that one correctly...

I open up a randon spreadsheet.

    then minimize all windows....

    then open up another spreadsheet....

usually it would open up this second spreadsheet in the already open excel program that is running.

but it doesnt. it opens up a brand new program of excel.

yes it would happen in the same manner, if you want to open a new workbook in the same Excel's main window, open it from file menu or by clicking on the file itself rather than opening an entire new excel main window.

hope this is what you asked for

    Question

    nope...

i know i can do that but with so many drives and so many files thats not quite as easy at it would be.

    lets give you an example?

i have 2 excel files on my desktop on my c: drive.

    file1.xls
    file2.xls

i double click file1.xls and it opens up excel as normal.

normally if i minimise excel and double click file2.xls it would restore the excel window and open it up next to file1.xls?

    you guys with me?

    the problem i have is.......

i have 2 excel files on my desktop on my c: drive.

    file1.xls
    file2.xls

i double click file1.xls and it opens up excel as normal.

if i minimise excel and double click file2.xls it opens up a new program of excel.

its a strange one and its got me stumped.....

    Hi paulwhyte,

Is it always "file2.xls" that causes the problem, if it is copy the data from the sheets in that workbook to another and re-name the file to "file2revised", then save it.
Close all your workbooks, then open "file1.xls" and "files2revised.xls" - see if the problem presists. It's a matter of trying difference things???
