    allow fill color to protected cell

    I have a protected sheet and just want to allow the user to paint on it (fill
    color)

    Rafael,

    When you protect the sheet, make sure you select the Format Cells option in the list of edit permissions. Unfortunately, this also allows the user to change other things about the format like border, font, etc...

    Which version of Excel?

    2002 and newer allow cell formatting when protected.

    Tools>Options>Protect Sheet.

    Choose from the options in the dialog box.

    It is the 2000 version.

    Can“t find that option in this version.
