You can use this:

=ISNUMBER(A1)

Dates are really just formatted numbers. So, a cell that contains a number
will also evaluate the same as a date entry:

7/15/2006

Using ISNUMBER, both will evaluate to TRUE. (provided that the DATE entry is
a real Excal date and not TEXT)
