Excel hangs when pasting HTML from Internet Explorer

When I copy data from Internet Explorer and paste it into Excel, Excel hangs or behaves very very slowly.

This does not happen when I select 'paste special' and then either 'paste as text' or 'paste as unicode', but then the format of the data becomes garbled.

Anyone know a possible cause?
