How do I link a word file or a .pdf so that it will show up as a "thumbnail"
in my excel document, and then when it is clicked, open that document?

Open the file you wish to insert the object into and click INSERT on the
Excel menu, selection OBJECT. In the OBJECT dialog box, click CREATE FROM
FILE TAB. Click the browse button to locate the file and then check LINK TO
FILE and DISPLAY AS ICON to on state. Click OK to exit the dialog box and
save your Excel file. You should be good to go...
