External Data Source and Adjacent Column / Data

I have a worksheet that gets it's data from an external data source. On
that same worksheet, the 2 columns immediately to the right of that dataset
are for "Notes" and a date.
My goal is that someone can put notes in that column and it "binds" itself
to that line of data, such that if the data moves to a different row in the
excel worksheet (because of other data changes or whatever), that note stays
with it. And if that line of data is removed from the dataset, a refresh
    would also remove the note.

Instead, data in "Note" is binding to the row number of the external data
set. This means that my excel sorting must be the same as my dataset
sorting. Otherwise the note gets moved on refresh. And if the row is
removed from the dataset, the note stays in whatever new row takes its
    place.

I see the inherant problem here with the fact that the note isn't actually
part of the dataset. But is there some trick to making this work that I'm
    not seeing??

    Thanks for any direction!
    Tim

I reckon keeping these in sync would be nearly impossible, you would be far
better to get the notes in the external database

don't use excel for data. it isn't a real reporting tool

keep your data in a database.. spit on anyone that tells you otherwise.
