    Cannot open xls files

My sister uses Excel and yesterday she clicked onto what looked like a
microsoft message on resizing messages and since then she gets a message
    saying Windows cannot
open the file. We tried restoring the PC to an earlier date but that did not
work. I've checked for xls file downloads but there doesn't seem to be a
simple download for opening the file. Can anyone make a suggestion? Thanks!

I don't recognize the message, but can your sister open excel and then do
    File|open to open her workbook?

If that works ok, but double clicking on the filename in windows explorer causes
    trouble, have her try:

    Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

    --- or ---

    Close Excel and
    Windows Start Button|Run
    excel /unregserver
    then
    Windows Start Button|Run
    excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
    factory defaults.
