How can I get a formula to work on visible cells with autofilter?

I have a worksheet that has data for new items, repaired items, and some with
no values. I use autofilter to select only the rows for the repaired items,
and I want to do an average of these items only. when I put the funtion in,
it selects every row, rather than only the visible ones. Short of having to
click through each individual row for the average, is there an easy way to do
    this? Thanks.
