how do i set decimal point like a calculator

I agree, who ever changed the automatic decimal placement (that operates like
a calculator decimal setting) should be FIRED ! For financial data entry...
and dealing with $ dollars, why should we NOW have to stop to key in a
    decimal pt? This is progress?

Not sure I understand what you mean; my calculator knows nothing about decimal points unless I tell it to apply one.

    Maybe you were used to

    Tools>Options>Edit tab, "Fixed decimal" checked

and it got unchecked some way.

    Just check.

There has been a change in 2003 with regards how you enter using fixed
decimal places, assume 2 decimal places checked then in Excel 2002 entering
    125. will return 125.00 thus the dot tells Excel not to set the decimals but
in 2003 you need to enter an extra zero like 125.0 or else you'll get 1.25
Don't know if that was what the OP meant though

Gotta to be a bug, right? What sick kid would think that a
general (default) option setting should override an explicit
decimal point in the data entry? Besides, hasn't MS ever
heard of "backward compatibility"? Okay, I know the answer
to that :-(. But I'm just saying: what sense can it ever make
to override the explicit decimal in data entry? This "must" be
a defect. Please report it to MS, if it is not fixed already.
