Is it possible to display the worksheet tabs along the left or right
(preferable) margins much like the tabs in a 3 ring binder rather than along
the bottom?

You can hide them, change their color or height, but you can't move them.
You could create a worksheet as a Table of Contents with linked sheet names.
It that appeals to you the free Excel add-in 'Excel Extras' will do that automatically.
