surface area optimization

    surface area optimization

    I am looking for an excel sheet for calculating a surface area optimization.
    Example : I have a floor 20m x 40x and a want to devide it into pieces. I
    have a lot of pallets to place on that floor. I want to calculate the
    optimal use of the surface area.
    Maybe a Java applet can do this or a nice freeware program.
    I can not find it on the internet.

    Are the pallets all the same size (what is the size)?
    Are they to touch each other?
    In general the maximum number of 'tiles' than can be put into a rectangle is
    with a symmetrical layout. My guess is that with small rectangular pallets
    you have one two ways ( long side parallel or at right angles to long side
    of area) and you could easily compute which as least wasted space.
