I have xls files saved to my Desktop. When I double click any of them,
excel will start, but then lock up. If I open Excel, then
File->Open->Browse to file and then open, I have no problems. Any
ideas as to what might be the problem? Thanks.

If you really mean excel locks up, then this won't work. But if you mean that
excel opens, but the file doesn't...
Sometimes one of these works:
Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
--- or ---
Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver
The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
