why do pivot tables create such huge files?

We have instances where small files of less than half a MB become 7.5MB big
when a pivot table is created. What is the reason for this and is there a way
    around it?

If you don't need to update the pivot table, then select the entire table,
copy it and paste/special as value back onto the table.

This will convert the pivot table into an ordinary table using much less
    space.
