Hide Duplicates in a Drop Down List

I have a column of a table I want to use a source for a drop down list
S3
S3
S4
S4
S4
S5
S5
S7
S8
I made a dropdown list using Data Validation. Is there a way to hide the
duplicates in the dropdown list? So my options are
S3
S4
S5
S7
S8
etc.

Couldn't you just use:
data|filter|advanced filter
to show the unique list and copy that to another column and use that?
