How do I merge from Excel into Word doc and retain formatting?

I'm using mailmerge to merge currency numbers from Excel into Word docs.
Seems to work fine with one exception, the dollar sign and the comma does not
merge. Merging from cells with formulas. solution?

    Peo,

Instead of getting $3,000 I get 3000 when I merge. I thought it might be
that I'm merging a formula but that's not it because it does the same for any
    currency number.

Debra Dalgleish posted this to a similar question:

There's an article on the Microsoft web site that might help you:

Answer Box: Numbers don't merge right in Word
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/as...164951033.aspx

And if you prefer the old Mail Merge helper, Word MVP Suzanne Barnhill
    has instructions here:

    http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/...ngWord2002.htm

about half way down the page.
