If Tools|Protection|Unprotect Sheet is greyed out, you have to ungroup first.

[Group] in the title bar means that you have multiple sheets selected.

You can rightclick on one of those selected sheets and choose Ungroup sheets.

If you don't see [Shared] in the title bar, you unshared it correctly. (If you
still see it in the title bar, try unsharing it again.)

If it was really tools|protection|unprotect Workbook that was disabled (after
you unshared the workbook), maybe the developer is stopping you on purpose.

You may be able to reset that toolbar:

Tools|Customize|toolbars tab
select worksheet menu bar
click the reset button.

You will lose any custom changes you've made to that toolbar.
