When shutting down my computer, message says Excel can't close.

When I try to shut down my computer, I get a message that Excel can't be
closed. I have tried re-opening and re-exiting Excell but that doesn't make
any difference. So I cannot shut down my laptop. Thus it would keep running
until the battery is worn down. Not a good solution. Can someone please
    help? Thanks@!

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Task Manager

    or

    run taskmgr.exe

select either tasks or processes, locate Excel and stop it.

We have solved a symptom. You still need to figure out why Excel is hanging.

(but at least you can shut the computer down (without removing the battery))

    Dear 'Gary's Student' ...
Much appreciate your kind assistance. I am hoping that Excel is in a better
mood tomorrow and doesn't hang up. :-) if it does, I'll be back for more
    ideas!

    Thanks so much!
