How do I put the line in the toolbar that will show what I've typed so I can
make corrections without having to retype the entire row?
Click on View on the worksheet menu bar.
then make sure Formula bar is checked
Then you can position the I-bar cursor where you want.

So the poster may have been missing the formula bar. <grin>
Use of F2 will help with entry so that you don't have to
start over. Also tools, options, edit (tab), edit directly in cell
