    ' and ^ everywhere

Can anyone explain why either ' or ^ is in every cell within a workbook. It
doesn't show up if anyone else view the book, so it must be a local setting.
The characters do not effect formulas or numbers they're more like hidden
    characters.

Sounds like your computer is running Excel to emulate Lotus 123.

Assuming you don't want that, try this:
    Tools>Options>Transition
    Select:
    Microsoft Excel Menus
    Deselect:
    Transition navigation keys
    Transition formula evaluation
    Transition formula entry
    Then click [OK]

    Does that help?

And if I remember my 123,

^ centers the value in the cell.
' makes it text and left justifies it
" makes it text and right justifies it.

    Lol
    / worksheet - column - set width...
    / data - query - input...
And wow, when version 3.0 was released, we had WYSIWYG for the first time,
on that fast, oh so fast 386's.
I forgot about the ^, ' and " but now I remember again and you're definitely
    right, Dave.
Last week I was looking for the version 2.1 diskettes on the web - too bad,
    I didn't find them.

    Uh oh, I'm gettin' old...

And that first WYSIWYG was a separate program, wasn't it. You couldn't edit in
that mode, IIRC--it has been a longgggggggg time.

Maybe it was an addin for 2.1????

Yup...it was called "Always". Input to cells>toggle to Always>format
cells>toggle back to 123. Seems silly now, but it was the best we had back
then. Looking back, those days seem...um...quaint?

Good memory. That's bothered me since I forgot it 1492--right after the boat
    trip!
