    Stationary Column

I have a large sheet with alist of names in the left hand column. I would
like that column (those names) to stay on the screen as I scroll to the left
and read information from the page. I have seen this done before but cannot
figure out how to "lock" the first column so it stays on the page.

Select cell B1. Choose Window/Freeze Panes.

Say your data is in column A. Click on cell B1. Then select Window > Freeze
    Panes
