    auto Text to Columns

    Hi All,

I have two machines with Excel 2003 installed.

On one when I open a .txt or a .csv file the data is automatically parsed to
    the columns.
On the other machine when I do the same, I have to manually go to the "Text
to Columns" command to parse the columns.

Is there a setting somewhere to change the behaviour?
I would like the parsing to be done automatically... if possible.

    Thanks in advance

    Steven Reid

The first thing I'd check is the windows setting that specifies what the list
    separator is:

    I'd close excel
windows start button|settings|control panel|regional and language options
    (or regional settings)
    Then customize button (winXP)
    then Numbers tab
    look at the list separator.

Most USA users use a comma.
    Others use a semicolon.

    Thanks Dave,

I had a look and the settings were correct.

I think I have worked out what the problem is. First off the machine that
wasnt doing what it was supposed to be has Excel 2000 SP3 installed whereas
the one that worked has Excel 2003 installed my bad. :-S

The issue occurs when the user tries to open the csv file from a web page.

So it looks like Excel 2000 doesnt like that.

Time for an upgrade I think

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Steve
