Excel self replication - help !

    Hi

I have a mojor problem, a 14 Mb workbook with about 10 sheets inside, with
various lookups, validation, etc but NO MACROS. When I try and delete or
insert a column, Excel opens a copy of the workbook and another Excel sheet
(blank). The whole computer locks up and Excel effectively crashes by 'Not
    responding'.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance . . . . Stuart

Maybe you have macros where you didn't look.

Debra Dalgleish has nice instructions for getting rid of macros at:
    http://www.contextures.com/xlfaqMac.html#NoMacros

Maybe it'll help you find something overlooked.

    Thx

I'll give it a go - there shouldn't be any Macros, I've never tried to write
    one !!

Try starting excel in safe mode.

    Close excel
    windows start button|run
    excel /safe

    Then File|open your workbook.

Do you get the same results? If no, then maybe it's a macro in another
    workbook.

Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors at:
    http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes at:
    http://www.jkp-ads.com/Articles/StartupProblems.htm

gave it a go - no difference, though there seems to be some latent sheets
from SPSS (the data source). I'm going to have to start from scratch !!

thx for all the advice. . . . .Gniff!
