Often when I open old excel files I get a horizontal "artifact type" line at
the bottom of Row 1, about @ Col. B to G. I have seen this with all versions
of excel - what is it and can I get rid of it in my old excel files.
Thanks,

Does Window/Unfreeze Panes get rid of it?

No that is not it. Thanks for the suggestion.
If I insert a row, the line moves down.
If I insert a column, the line moves right
If I delete the first two rows - the artifact is gone (but so is the first
two rows of my spreadsheet).
If I delete the contents of the cells in the first two lines - the line
stays.
If I copy the first two rows together, when I paste I get the line.
When I copy the first two lines seperately, I do not get the line.
My fix for this problem has been to copy the first two rows - seperately
Then delete the first two rows - together.
Then insert two new rows.
Then copy the old info to the new rows.
This works OK - but what a pain in the a$$.
Any better ideas would be appreciated.

It may be a squished combo box or text box. If you point to the line,
and your pointer changes to a four-headed arrow, click on the line to
select it, then press the delete key.
Or, choose Edit>Go To, click Special
Select Objects, click OK
Press the Delete key, to delete any objects that were selected.
If that didn't work, it may be an object from the control toolbox:
Choose View>Toolsbars>Control toolbox
Click the Design mode button
Point to one of the lines
If the pointer changes to a four-headed arrow, click on the line
to select it
Press the delete key, to delete the line
Click the Exit Design Mode button
Close the Control toolbox.
