Validation "Y" or "N"

is it possible to validate a cell to just be entered a Y or a N ?????

Yep, Just go to Data->Validation and select List. For the source, type Y,N and press OK.

You could always use worksheet events but that could be overkill when such a simple solution via Validation is available. The user doesn't have to use the dropdown menu, they can simply type Y or N in the cell. Is there any particular reason as to why you don't want a dropdown menu?
