Both existing and new files have becomer or begin with a READ ONLY status

Hello,

Files I've had for years and have opened hundreds of times are now loading as READ ONLY which of course requires me to rename them before I close them.

New files I set up are created READ ONLY.

Both are undesirable results. Something unknown to me has changed and my research has been unhelpful.

Who can tell me what's going on all of a sudden?

The sample file is NOT opening as read only for me. Are you still using Excel 2019?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, my Excel is part of Office 2019.

It opens as READ ONLY on my system. I'm confused.

I am also using Excel 2019. No such issue with me. Can you try to open the file in Excel?

Well I guess my post is simply asking, "On MY machine, can anyone tell me how I can keep my files from both changing to READ ONLY on their own and how I can create NEW files that are NOT Read Only as they have always been in the past?".

I've used Excel for 20+ years and never encountered an issue like this.

Look at security settings, my trusted locations reset and my files werent updating from tem[pltes until i reestablished path, just a guess

This has been solved. When I open(ed) and excel file I was getting a drop down that the program could not find XXXXX. I had an add on called ASAP Utilities which I had recently deleted. My Read only issue apparent began when I had deleted that add on. Fortunately it was still in my recycle bin. I restored it and my Read Only problem went away.

Clearly, it is a problem with your environment rather than the files themselves. I can open the sample file on my iPad and, obviously, others have opened the file with no issues on PCs.

I was wondering if temporary file lock files had not been automatically deleted. But I would have thought that would only affect existing files, not newly created ones.

Can you create a new file and edit it? Then, after you save and close it, it is set to Read Only when you try to re-open the file?
