    Custom Format Basic Question

    Hi,

I have few basic questions about custom format which I don't really understand.

To display numbers with Thousands Separator a comma is used.
I typed #,# but Excel automatically changes this to #,###

I understood # as a digit placeholder, sort of like * in DOS and ? in DOS is similar to 0, except it is number. So wouldn't #,# be sufficient?

And what does #,##0 actually mean? The resulting display is the same as #,###.
Even the examples in Excel has #,##0

    Thank you
    Henry

    Re: Custom Format Basic Question

Back when I was first learning spreadsheets, this was one of my most frequently referenced help files: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...rs=en-us&ad=us

I think Excel automatically changes #,# to #,### because it can only group thousands in groups of three.

There is a difference between #,##0 and #,###. The 0 placeholder tells Excel to display insignificant 0s in that position. # tells Excel to not display insignificant 0s. If your number is never between -0.5 and +0.5, then there is no difference, as you note. However, a number between -0.5 and +0.5 will be displayed as 0 with a number format of #,##0 and will appear empty with a number format of #,###

    Does that help?

It's because the comma is a 1000 separator so it would need at least 4 digits.

There's a detailed explanation here with examples.
