Hello to all
I want to create about 20 cells in a column that will be merged in pairs. It means to select 40 cells in one column and use the merge command to merge these cells into 20 cells. Can anyone help?

Welcome to the forum.
Not possible without VBA, but nor is it advisable: merged cells are rarely necessary and should be avoided at all costs. Just make your column a bit wider And use Centre Across Selection for any text that needs to spread across two or more columns.

Don't do it. Merged cells are always a pain. Your next question will probably be something along the lines of how do I analyse this data when I have merged cells?
And the answer will, most likely be, get rid of the merged cells.
Just trying to save you some time and heartache.
